The thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck is a part of the endocrine system and plays a critical role in metabolism, insulin and cortisol, detoxification, body temperature, heart rate, digestion motility, muscle contraction and more.
The hormones are small chemical messengers with the goal of carrying out different functions to the organs, muscles and tissues. They impact metabolic rate by regulating the rate at which the body uses up calories.
Thyroid problems are more common today than ever with symptoms including weight loss or weight gain, slow or fast heart rate, intolerance to heat or cold, irregular menstrual cycles, dry or moist skin and more. An under, or over, functioning thyroid is going to have a big impact on the body.
Elaborating on some of the things you can implement to help nourish your thyroid:
Consume foods high in selenium, zinc, and iodine: Choose foods that offer thyroid support like seaweed or sea vegetables, oysters, brazil nuts, dark leafy greens, and fish.
Consume foods high in Vit A, Vit C, Vit D3 and B Vitamins: like cod liver oil, beef/chicken liver, squashes, peppers, green peas
Deep restorative sleep: Sleep deprivation is associated with elevated levels of TSH. When prolonged the adrenal glands are impacted which then will impact the thyroid gland. Nothing good happens past 10PM…go to bed!
Reduce sugar intake: Consuming large amounts of sugar increases the release of insulin. Large amounts of this suppresses thyroid production
Protein Intake: The amino acids that make up protein like tyrosine are needed to make thyroid hormone. It also balances blood sugar and transports hormones around the body.Makes sure you are getting enough every day
If you are suspicious of thyroid problems and need to run a thyroid function test make sure they include the following: Total T4, Free T4, Total T3, Free T3, TSH
