Biofilms: What are they?
Biofilms are a protective mechanism by microbial families as rather ingenious (and slimy) shelter to various bacteria, fungus, parasites, or mold so that they can keep on doing what they love doing best…making you miserable!
This layer of protective “slime” keeps guard going into stealth mode avoiding detection by the immune system. Because of this slimy biofilm layer encompassing it all, any attempt to address them through nutraceuticals or medications often doesn’t succeed.
It’s not uncommon for individuals to hammer away at their Lyme, coinfections, parasites, gut problems, or mold and feel they are hitting a wall. In a way it’s their immune system that is hitting a slimy gooey biofilm wall that cannot be penetrated to chisel away at the pathogen.
How it affects healing…
These tricky little biofilms, known to swap genetics with each other forming a stronger bond, can hinder healing when not addressed. The hard working immune system becomes blind to these stealth-like biofilms so the problem remains and symptoms persist. As soon as they no longer detect a threat they will re-emerge repeating the same cycle.
Healing requires a multifaceted approach and biofilms are a part of that plan. There are many ways to support biofilming “busting” that can allow progression to be made in healing. If you’re not currently addressing biofilms, talk to your practitioner about ways to do so!
